STOP Procrastinating πŸ™ˆ with These 5 Hacks!

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 23

Dear Reader,

I have always struggled with procrastination. I distinctly remember researching and writing two 10-page college papers due the next day by pulling an all-nighter. (I think I ended up getting an A- on one and a B+ on another, which I'm proud of in a strange way πŸ˜‚).

Even now as a mom and business owner, I find it hard to focus and do what I would rather put off - like decluttering, meal planning, editing podcast episodes, and cleaning the bathroom.

In Episode 135 I dive into 5 ways that you can leverage the power of habits to stop procrastination in its tracks!

1. Make it easy - when it comes to starting anything - especially something you're dreading - you want to "make it so easy you can't say no". James Clear compares the activation energy required for chemical reactions to those of starting a and completing a habit. I love this quote from him:

Similar to how every chemical reaction has an activation energy, we can think of every habit or behavior as having an activation energy as well.
This is just a metaphor of course, but no matter what habit you are trying to build there is a certain amount of effort required to start the habit. In chemistry, the more difficult it is for a chemical reaction to occur, the bigger the activation energy. For habits, it’s the same story. The more difficult or complex a behavior, the higher the activation energy required to start it.

Decluttering? Start with one drawer.

Meal planning? Start with one meal you know your family will love.

Cleaning? Start with one bathroom.

2. Make it fun - make something that seems dreadful more enjoyable! Listen to a podcast (I know a good one) or an energizing playlist. Or pick a reward for when you complete the activity - just make sure the reward supports your goals and doesn't detract from them!

3. Start messy - as a recovering perfectionist, I frequently don't start something because I don't want to fail. There is a link between procrastination and perfectionism, because we put off what we think we can't do perfectly. Ask yourself - what is the worst thing that can happen if I start this messy and it doesn't go as planned? As my husband likes to say - Adapt and Overcome.

4. Envision the return on investment (ROI) before you start - ask yourself some questions before you start the thing you've been putting off:

  • How will I feel when I've completed this, or even done a part of it?
  • What is my overall goal for this? (reduce anxiety, stress, support your health, etc.?)
  • What is the ROI on this vs. what I'm doing when I procrastinate, such as scrolling social media or mindlessly consuming other content?

5. Don't break the chain - tracking how many days you do something can be SUPER motivating and keep you in momentum, rather than procrastination.

BONUS TIP: set up your environment for success so it's harder to procrastinate - having this "on-ramp" routine will help you focus on what you need to do!

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 54 Dear Reader, Most of us grew up with this mantra about rest planted firmly in our heads:πŸ’€ I'll rest when I'm dead. πŸ’€ Or perhaps you see rest as a reward when EVERYTHING is done...except here's the thing - it's never all done. πŸ˜‚Seeing rest as a right, rather than a reward, is REVOLUTIONARY. (And getting the letter "r" in a sentence that many times is really remarkable 😜). But how do we prioritize rest in a hustle-driven culture? On the...

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 52 Dear Reader, When my kids want to hold onto EVERYTHING that comes through the front door, I have to remember that it's normal to be attached to stuff. In fact, there are several cognitive biases that cause adults to hold on, so why should we expect our kids (whose brains don't fully develop until their mid-20's) to let go of their stuff willingly? On the Podcast This week on the podcast, I shared some helpful tips about how to help your...

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 50 Dear Reader, When my boys learned they actually had a FULL day of school yesterday (instead of a snow day or 2-hour delay), this was their response: Meanwhile, my mom friends and I were: Slow clap from the moms (and dads)! On the Podcast One of the benefits of the kids being back in school is that they aren't leaving their stuff (what my organizer friend Lisa Lizotte lovingly calls "droppings") all over the house. This week's podcast...
