Go ahead...break these decluttering rules! 🫢

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 58

Dear Reader,

We are finishing week 3 of our 6-week Lenten Decluttering Challenge for moms (happening in the Facebook group). This week's focus is stewardship. I define stewardship as taking good care of the resources that have been entrusted to us.

Here's a sample of one of the daily challenge posts! If you're a mom and want to participate, feel free to join us for the remainder of the challenge!

On the Podcast

I am a notorious rule-follower 😇 (just ask my husband). But when it comes to decluttering, some of the so-called "rules" from decluttering experts keep us stuck in overwhelm and perfectionism.

This week I shared the 5 decluttering rules I love to break (and why you should, too!) Here's a brief overview:

1. Separating out donations into what we want to sell, give to friends, give to specific charities, etc.

2. Taking everything out at once (for example, the entire contents of your closet and throwing everything on your bed).

3. Keeping anything (especially clothes) based upon what “sparks joy”.

4. Using a “maybe” box.

5. Buying matching/cohesive bins, especially for inside drawers (I'm looking at you, Container Store!)

Want to know what I recommend instead AND learn a bonus "rule" I love to break? Listen to Episode 185 OR watch it on YouTube!

Things I'm Loving Right Now

✨ One of my favorite tools to stay organized and decluttered is the Reminders app on my iPhone. I use this for daily and weekly reminders, including:

  • vitamins for myself
  • vitamins for my kids
  • school library book returns for each kid
  • adding money to the school lunch funds

Reminders integrates with the Calendar app on my iPhone so I can also see them all in my daily calendar view as well!

✨ My decluttering/organizing resource of the week is the time blocking method from Chelsi Jo Moore from Systemize Your Life. I am participating in her free ESCAPE challenge this week and was reminded how much I love her 5-block time blocking approach (Morning, AM, Work, PM, Evening) - you can grab her Time Blocking Workbook here to learn more. (Scroll all the way down to the bottom and you'll see it).

✨ My favorite meal of the week is grilled steak fajitas - I was shocked my boys loved it so much!

What are some things you're loving right now? Hit reply and let me know.

On the journey with you,

Emily

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 54 Dear Reader, Most of us grew up with this mantra about rest planted firmly in our heads:💀 I'll rest when I'm dead. 💀 Or perhaps you see rest as a reward when EVERYTHING is done...except here's the thing - it's never all done. 😂Seeing rest as a right, rather than a reward, is REVOLUTIONARY. (And getting the letter "r" in a sentence that many times is really remarkable 😜). But how do we prioritize rest in a hustle-driven culture? On the...

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 52 Dear Reader, When my kids want to hold onto EVERYTHING that comes through the front door, I have to remember that it's normal to be attached to stuff. In fact, there are several cognitive biases that cause adults to hold on, so why should we expect our kids (whose brains don't fully develop until their mid-20's) to let go of their stuff willingly? On the Podcast This week on the podcast, I shared some helpful tips about how to help your...

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 50 Dear Reader, When my boys learned they actually had a FULL day of school yesterday (instead of a snow day or 2-hour delay), this was their response: Meanwhile, my mom friends and I were: Slow clap from the moms (and dads)! On the Podcast One of the benefits of the kids being back in school is that they aren't leaving their stuff (what my organizer friend Lisa Lizotte lovingly calls "droppings") all over the house. This week's podcast...
