Unmotivated? Try reverse decluttering!

Decluttering Tips and Support

Dear Reader,

Have you ever heard of the Law of Attraction?

At its core, it means "like attracts like". If you focus on the things you want in your life (including health, relationships, finances, and more), those things are more likely to come to you.

What does the Law of Attraction have to do with decluttering motivation? I'm glad you asked!

On the Podcast

Decluttering is decision making.

Decision making is hard.

Therefore, decluttering is not necessarily fun in the moment because you are taxing your energy and dealing with the emotions that bubble up from the stories you tell yourself about your stuff.

But what if instead of focusing on what we want to remove, we focus instead on what we want in our lives? That's where the Law of Attraction meets reverse decluttering.

Reverse decluttering is focusing on what you want, rather than what you don't.

In this week's episode, we dive into how to use it to give you the motivation you need!

Here's a preview: Two of the best examples of reverse decluttering are the reverse hanger trick and the packing party.

The reverse hanger trick is where you put all the hangers in your closet backwards, and turn it around every time you wear an item. After a period of time (I'd recommend 2-4 weeks) you can see what you haven't worn and consider donating those items.

I learned about the concept of a "packing party" from The Minimalists. It's also called the "move-out method". Essentially you pack up all your stuff as if you were moving, and as you need something, you take it out of the box. Like the reverse hanger trick, after a certain amount of time you see what you haven't used.

What I'm Loving Right Now

My decluttering/organizing tool of the week is an over-the-door organizer. You can use these in your closet for shoes, in your pantry, or even in your office/craft room for wrapping paper. It's a great way to use vertical space!

My decluttering/organizing resource is this list of free resources from The Minimalists. Two of my favorites are their Minimalists Rulebook and the 30 day Minimalism Game calendar.

Remember if you're an overwhelmed mom who wants to declutter her home, head, and heart - check out my free Facebook group!

My favorite recipe of the week is this orzo Tuscan chicken bake - if you use rotisserie chicken it's incredibly easy prep - dump and bake.

What things are you loving right now? Hit reply and let me know.

On the journey with you,

Emily

P.S. Skipped to the end? No problem! This week I spoke about reverse decluttering and why it's my new favorite approach.

Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, Our house is getting packed up on Monday and we are officially moving to Pennsylvania in two weeks. Needless to say, my mind is racing with a million to-do's. Unfortunately, most of the to-do's aren't fun but rather boring "adulting" ones like going to the dump, putting together Banker boxes, and making phone calls. I wish I could have a positive attitude like our friend Ted Lasso... ...but often I find myself unmotivated and procrastinating. So how...

Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, As my two boys have grown, they have started taking my statements and requests as, shall we say, gateways for negotiation. If I tell them they can watch one show, they ask if they can watch two. If I tell them they can have three pieces of candy, they ask if they can have four. If I ask them to be home for dinner by 5:30, they ask if they can play until 6. It's constant. And exhausting. It's hard to hold boundaries when they just won't quit! If...

Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, For those of you who are following along with our moving journey, we are breathing a bit easier this week with a signed contract on our house. We also have a bid in on a house in Pennsylvania and are anxiously waiting to hear back! A while back, I wrote a blog post about my ten non-negotiable habits that has done well for itself in the land of Google search. :) My habits have mostly stayed the same with a few updates I'd love to share with you....
