Dear Reader,
This week I decided to take my own advice - slow down and put boundaries around how I was spending my time. I had been stretched thin and (ironically) felt a bit overwhelmed!
I decided recently to move my "home" activities like cleaning, errands, and medical appointments on Tuesdays/Thursdays, while moving my work activities to Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I felt a lot less scattered this week and didn't dread going to the grocery store nearly as much!
It's amazing how such a small shift has allowed me to feel more joy this week, even in the "blessed mundane" tasks of motherhood.
If you're feeling overwhelmed and like you don't have control of your time, try my 6-step S.I.M.P.L.E. method:
Stop so you can actually think and reflect - try to find a quiet place, limit distractions, so you can actually think about the problem(s) overwhelming you
Imagine the ideal scenario - write it down! What is the ideal outcome you are looking for? Be specific.
Mind the gap between what is and what you want - ask yourself, do you need to be creative about finding the resources you need? Don't judge, just notice the gap and how it's affecting you.
Plan one small change in one area - ONE change in ONE area because we are going after small, sustainable changes that make a big impact!
Let those affected by this change know why you are doing it and when - explain to your family, friends, and others impacted by this change what you expect and be patient with them as they follow your guidance.
Execute your plan and enjoy the results - test your small change for a few weeks before tweaking. Notice what is working, what isn't, and be willing to make adjustments.
If you want to change your environment and get rid of your clutter for good, I'd love to meet you in a 60-minute decluttering coaching session!
If you are a homeschooling mom (or know one) you don't want to miss the Happily Homeschooling Littles Summit which goes from February 19 - March 4. Discover strategies that will help you simplify homeschooling, unlock meaningful teaching experiences, and keep your sanity in the process.
Thanks for welcoming me into your inbox every week. I appreciate you so much. See you next Thursday where we'll celebrate my 100th episode of the Moms Overcoming Overwhelm Podcast!!
On this journey with you,
Emily
P.S. Scrolled to the end? No problem. This week on the podcast I shared my 6-step S.I.M.P.L.E. method to help you get out of overwhelm and spoke to Kirsten Vossler about overcoming your "martyr mindset" to see motherhood as a powerful calling.

Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, As my two boys have grown, they have started taking my statements and requests as, shall we say, gateways for negotiation. If I tell them they can watch one show, they ask if they can watch two. If I tell them they can have three pieces of candy, they ask if they can have four. If I ask them to be home for dinner by 5:30, they ask if they can play until 6. It's constant. And exhausting. It's hard to hold boundaries when they just won't quit! If...
Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, For those of you who are following along with our moving journey, we are breathing a bit easier this week with a signed contract on our house. We also have a bid in on a house in Pennsylvania and are anxiously waiting to hear back! A while back, I wrote a blog post about my ten non-negotiable habits that has done well for itself in the land of Google search. :) My habits have mostly stayed the same with a few updates I'd love to share with you....
Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, We are officially moving from Virginia to Pennsylvania this summer, and I have NEVER been more grateful for my clutter-free home. In order to get house "listing-ready" we've had to clear surfaces, relocate furniture, and maximize the space to entice potential buyers. Watch out! Don't open that closet! Since we don't have a garage, any excess stuff has been moved to part of our basement. As I moved Lego sets, bean bag chairs, bookshelves, and end...
