TRANSFORM Your Home in 2025

Decluttering Tips and Support Weekly Newsletter Vol. 48

Dear Reader,

One minute, your kids are enjoying the new-fallen snow on a sled.

The next minute, this.

Between Andrew's broken arm and 4 snow days in a row, I've never been more grateful that my house is decluttered and the basic systems I swear by (laundry, dishes, etc.) stayed in place.

If you want to kick your clutter to the curb in 2025 - despite what else comes your way - I'm here to help! Let's work together virtually or in-person to start the year off right.

On the Podcast

Yesterday I shared my TRANSFORM system for decluttering your home. This is the exact method I use with my clients! Let's dive in:

Trash - once you pick the room/area of your home where you want to start, do a sweep and grab all obvious trash.

Relocation bins - inevitably you'll find things that don't belong in the space you're in. Grab a few bins, collect the items by floor/room but wait until you're done in that area before you put anything back. Otherwise you'll get distracted.

Anything easy to declutter - this is the "low-hanging fruit" of decluttering - things you know you want to donate. Clothing or shoes your kids have grown out of, books you no longer read, anything you know would bless others and you don't have an emotional attachment to. Put them in bags with the recipient's name on it and then put it in your car.

Name what matters in this season - now that the easy decisions are done, ask yourself what your vision is for the space you're tackling. How do you want it to feel, function, and flow? What activities do you want to do there, and how can you prioritize decluttering based upon those priorities?

Sort like items with like by category - perhaps you have books in your nightstand, in a pile on the floor, and in the closet. Gather everything by category and sort accordingly, so you know how much volume you have.

Fill your designated boundary starting with "loves" and "likes" - pick a boundary such as a shelf, drawer, container, bin, etc. and start filling with what you use and love the most, and then what you like.

Out-of-sight, out-of-mind bins for "maybes" - if you get to anything you're not sure about and aren't willing to let go of (yet) then use the famous out-of-sight, out-of-mind bin. Just make sure you set a deadline on your phone to review it!

Reflect on what no longer serves you and release the excess - now you're getting to the "tough stuff" where we have to ask ourselves some important questions to know why we're holding on. Once we break through these mindset blocks, it's easier to let go!

Maintain the space with tidying habits - now that you have a decluttered space, use daily or weekly tidying habits to keep it maintained!

Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, Recently my oldest son called out to me right before he was about to go to bed: "Mom! I need you! I think I decluttered too much!" My initial thought... He showed me an Amazon box full of trinkets he had decluttered from his "treasure box" - a shoe box that is the physical boundary for all the small knick-knacks he gets from school, birthday parties, etc. He had decluttered WITHOUT prompting! I was shocked. 😮 Now mind you, this has been several years...

Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, My youngest son Sean just learned how to ride his bike. When he started, we ran beside him, holding onto one handlebar as well as the back of his neck to keep him steady, and helping him get started again with a gentle push. Eventually, he didn't need us to hold the handlebar. Then, he didn't need us to hold the back of his neck. Then, he was able to start on his own. I'll always remember when he said, "It's OK. You can let go." Little does he know...

Decluttering Tips and Support Dear Reader, While I'm known for my poetry writing skills, I've NEVER been known for my artistic or crafting abilities. I can draw a stick figure with the best of them, and can maneuver a hot glue gun if required, but that's the extent of my skills. My "special set" does NOT include crafting! So when someone in my Facebook community requested an episode about decluttering and organizing crafting and hobby rooms, I felt out of my element...but up to the challenge!...
